Elvis Perkins was born in Manhattan in February 1975 and raised in New York City. His father was actor Anthony Perkins and his mother was photographer Berry Berenson. He began working on his debut album, Ash Wednesday, in 2002.His lyrics often reflect tragic events occurring in his life. When Perkins was 16 his father died of AIDS and his mother was aboard one of the planes that hit the World Trade Center on 9/11. Ash Wednesday is a chronologically sequenced album of songs written before and after his mother's death.
